Traffic patterns change on Hal Greer Boulevard from 6th Avenue to 9th Avenue, and Washington Boulevard beginning 7 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2023
Drivers can expect a shift in the traffic pattern along Hal Greer Boulevard from Sixth Avenue to Ninth Avenue beginning Monday, June 5, 2023, as contractors continue working in the 16th Street viaduct. The existing inside northbound lane of Hal Greer Boulevard will be closed, and all southbound traffic shifted to the right lane of Hal Greer Boulevard. This also will include work on the medians along Washington Boulevard and Hal Greer Boulevard. The west and east inside turning lanes will be shifted to the right to allow the contractor to complete the work.
Street parking will be removed from Third Avenue to Ninth Avenue on Hal Greer Boulevard.
Please use caution when adjusting to new traffic patterns. Travelers should expect the pattern change to take several days to set up and should not use areas between cones for turning.
Work is part of the Hal Greer Boulevard Corridor Project. Although crews are not always on-site, this is a permanent construction zone until the project is complete.
Traffic traveling through the area should pay attention to posted signs and message boards for current traffic patterns.
Drivers should expect delays, adjust their commuting schedules, and avoid the area if possible.

Traffic patterns to change on Hal Greer Blvd from 3rd Avenue to 9th Avenue beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2023.
Drivers can expect a shift in the traffic pattern along Hal Greer Boulevard from Third Avenue to Ninth Avenue beginning Monday, March 20, 2023, as contractors continue installing temporary traffic signals. All traffic will be shifted to northbound lanes. Traffic from Third Avenue to Ninth Avenue will change to one lane in each direction. Please use caution when adjusting to new traffic patterns. Street parking will be removed from Third Avenue to Ninth Avenue. Travelers should expect the pattern change in this area to take several days to complete and should not use areas between cones for turning.

Drivers can expect a shift in traffic pattern, beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday, February 23, 2023, at the entrance to Cabell Huntington Hospital, as contractors begin work to install temporary traffic signals. The entrance to the hospital will remain accessible, but it may take several days to install the temporary signal.
Work is part of the Hal Greer Boulevard Complete Streets Project. Although crews are not always on site, this is a permanent construction zone until the project is complete.

The median and one lane in each direction on Hal Greer Boulevard will be closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily as work begins on the initial phases of the Hal Greer Boulevard Corridor Project beginning 2/21/23
Work during this initial phase includes digging out the median to build planter boxes between 3rd and 7th avenues, breaking up pavement for a new paving base from 7th to 8th avenues and digging out the median for planter boxes between 8th Avenue and Washington Boulevard. Contractors also will install temporary traffic controls and temporary traffic signals. One lane in each direction on Hal Greer Boulevard will remain open to traffic.
Motorists traveling through the area should watch for flaggers, equipment and workers in the area and pay attention to posted signs and message boards for current traffic patterns. Motorists also should expect delays, adjust their commuting schedules and avoid the area if possible.
About the Hal Greer Corridor Project
The City of Huntington, the West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Division of Highways (WVDOH), and KYOVA Interstate Planning Commission have partnered on a roadway project to improve connectivity and safety for all modes of transportation on Hal Greer Boulevard from 3rd Avenue to Kinetic Drive, and transform the corridor into a welcoming gateway and community asset.
After a multi-year planning, public engagement, and design process, construction from 3rd Avenue to Washington Boulevard is expected to begin in March 2023.
Funding for construction was provided by KYOVA Interstate Planning Commission Surface Transportation Block Grant and matched by the City of Huntington.
This project is being designed and funded in phases:
- Phases 1 and 2: Hal Greer Boulevard from 3rd Avenue to Washington Boulevard – Construction to begin March 2023.
- Phase 3: Hal Greer Boulevard from Washington Boulevard to Kinetic Park Drive – Design and funding in progress.
The Hal Greer Boulevard Complete Street Project has been awarded to Triton Construction. The construction phase from 3rd Avenue to Washington Boulevard is estimated to begin in March 2023.
