Business License Application

State of West Virginia

Before engaging in business activity in West Virginia, every individual or business entity must obtain a West Virginia business registration certificate from the State Tax Division. If you are engaged in business activity, a business registration certificate can be obtained by applying either through the WV One Stop Business Portal or by applying to the Tax Commissioner.

Identify Zoning Requirements and Apply for Applicable Permits

  • Contact the Planning & Zoning Division at planningdept@huntingtonwv.gov to make sure that the location of the proposed business is zoned for your business. 
  • Permit Types:
    • Certificate of Occupancy: Required before any new building can be occupied or before an existing building can be used for a new purpose. This applies whenever a new business goes into an existing or new structure or there is a change of business owner. 
    • Home Occupation Permit: Required for any home-based business.
    • Mobile Food Vendor Permit: Required for food trucks and food trailers. 
    • Outdoor Dining Permit: Required for dining areas on the public right-of-way.
    • Sign Permit

Apply for a Huntington Business License 

  • To conduct business in the City of Huntington, you must obtain a Huntington Business License and email your application to finance@huntingtonwv.gov. 
  • Fee: $20. Fees may vary based on business license type, and fees are not prorated.
  • License term: July 1 and ending on June 30. A business license renewal will be sent out around the first of June each year.
