Employment Verifications
To verify employment of any
city of
Huntington
employee, including fire fighters, please contact the Human
Resources Division at (304) 696-5979.
Window Stickers
The
City of Huntington Fire Department
frequently receives phone calls from citizens regarding window
stickers to indicate locations of children or disabled persons in
the home.
Our Department does NOT advocate the
use of these stickers because many people move or children and
disabled persons change rooms as family or individual needs change.
Oftentimes these stickers are not
removed under these circumstances, which leads others to believe
children or disabled persons are in another location than where
those individuals are actually located.
It is a safety concern for our fire
fighters because if the person is no longer located in that room or
even in that structure, then our fire fighters might be put in
harm’s way unnecessarily.
Additionally, some opponents of the
stickers also believe child predators might use them to target
children.
Filling Swimming Pools
The City of Huntington Fire Department
does not fill swimming pools.
Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors
I hear a
“chirping” sound coming from my carbon monoxide or smoke detector.
What do I do?
More often than not, that “chirping”
sound you hear is because your batteries are low in these devices.
However, if you want to make sure this
is the problem, then we suggest you dial 911 to have a fire truck
sent to your location.
What do I do if I suspect
carbon monoxide poisoning?
We have many citizens who
contact our administrative number saying they do not want to bother
911 with such a silly question.
Trust us when we say this is NOT a
silly question.
Since the City of
Huntington Fire Department
does not monitor its administrative number 24 hours per day, we
might not hear a message you left on Saturday until Monday morning
or even later.
Therefore, if you suspect you are
experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, then dial 911
IMMEDIATELY and leave the structure to find fresh air.
What are the symptoms of carbon
monoxide poisoning?
According to the
Centers for Disease Control website (http://www.cdc.gov/co/faqs.htm)
symptoms include:
-
Headache
-
Dizziness
-
Weakness
-
Nausea
-
Vomiting
-
Chest Pain
-
Confusion
-
High levels can cause loss of consciousness or death
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests
Printable FOIA Form Click Here
We have two different
types of fire reports we offer when a FOIA request is received.
It is important to know the difference
between these reports so you are better able to request the exact
information you need.
A fire incident report
(oftentimes what we refer to as a NFIRS report) is a report written
by the first-in company officer.
This is NOT an investigative report and
generally will say “undetermined” for cause and origin.
The report is useful because typically
it contains information regarding the owner, occupant, and what the
responding engine company did during the fire.
A fire investigation
report is a report specifically dealing with the cause and origin
investigation of a fire conducted by our Bureau of Fire Prevention
staff.
This report is completed by the Fire
Marshal or one of our Deputy Fire Marshals.
Anyone requesting a “fire report” will be given
just a fire incident report (or NFIRS report) unless they
specifically request a copy of the fire investigation report in
addition to or in place of said report.
To obtain a fire incident report and/or fire
investigation report, please print out and complete the PDF version
of the FOIA request form and mail it to:
City of
Huntington
Fire Department
Fire Chief’s Office
839
Seventh Avenue
Huntington,
WV
25701-2117
You may also call our
administrative office at (304) 696-5950 extension 4024 during
business hours.
Please do not go to our fire stations
to obtain copies of reports as we do assess a fee, which can only be
paid at the Fire Chief’s Office.
FEES FOR REPORTS:
A fee for these reports is assessed.
The base fee is $10.00 for compiling
the information.
In addition to that fee, you are
charged 50 cents per page of the report.
Not all fire incident reports or fire
investigation reports are the same length, so it is best to contact
us prior to sending a check for payment.
When sending a
check, please be sure to make it out to: City of Huntington.
Outside Vendors
Outside vendors offering
products and/or services to city employees are strictly forbidden
from visiting fire stations for the purposes of enrollment.
If your business would like to offer
products and/or services to fire department employees, then please
refer to the following procedures for doing so.
ALL vendors must first be cleared through the
city of
Huntington’s
Human Resources Director.
To contact Human Resources, please call
(304) 696-5979 and speak with the Human Resources Director or his or
her designee.
Once approval has been given by the Human
Resources Division, the outside vendor may approach the Fire
Department to set up informational meetings.
All such initial inquiries are to be
made at the Fire Chief’s Office located at
839 Seventh Avenue,
Huntington,
West Virginia,
25701
or by calling (304) 696-5950 extension 4024.
However, we prefer contact be initiated
through the Human Resources Director so we are not placed in a
position where we are “surprised” by vendors coming in saying they
have been approved by Human Resources to offer products and/or
services.
Informational meetings will be scheduled
across each of our three shifts, so prepare to be at our facility
three separate days to ensure maximum exposure to employees.
(We apologize in advance for this
inconvenience, but it is unavoidable given we have three 24-hour
shifts.
When scheduling, we make every attempt
to ensure the three required days fall consecutively to make it easy
for everyone.)
These meetings will be held at
Centennial Fire Station located at
839 Seventh Avenue,
Huntington,
West Virginia,
25701.
We will ensure adequate space is
available to you for your purposes.
Unless the products and/or services being offered
are those provided for by the city (e.g., employee life insurance),
we will NOT make these informational meetings mandatory for our
personnel.
No outside vendors are to visit outside
fire stations unless an employee already enrolled initiates the
contact and asks the vendor(s) to stop by.
This is done to ensure the rights of
our employees not to be solicited at their place of employment if
they so choose.
